The chemical composition of the earth's primitive crust is estimated by critical evaluation of data derived from ultramafic mantle samples and partial melting model calculations for mafic and ultramafic magmas of various ages. Chemical irregularities inferred in the earth are discussed in terms of earth-forming and mantle-core differentiation processes. The well-defined continuous depletion trend of lithophile elements towards lower temperature must be related to volatility-controlled processes operating before and after core formation. Consequently, depletion of K and Rb in the mantle relative to Cl chondrites cannot be a result of core formation. Compatible and moderately incompatible elements in basaltic magma sources have not changed significantly since the early Archaean, and estimated abundances for refractory lithophile elements in the primitive mantle are about 2.0 times ordinary chondrites.
