Progress that has taken place since 1976 in knowledge of the orbital motion of the planets is reviewed. Attention is given to analytical theories, numerical integrations, comparisons of theories and ephemerides, and fundamental constants for the theories, and the calculation of ephemerides. Prospects for future developments in each area are also considered. It is noted that a primary aim of such investigations should be to make the theoretical calculations more accurate than the observational data, and then to improve the methods of observations so that the ephemerides need to be improved again.
