New photoelectric UBV magnitudes and colours for 118 stars and intensities for 23 stars in the region of the southern open cluster NGC 2547 are presented. By using both colour-magnitude and diagrams as well as published MK spectral types and kinematical data, 58 stars brighter than 13.4 mag are found to be cluster members and 12 stars to be probable members. The cluster contains only one red-giant member and two variable stars. A real gap of Δ(B-V) ≃ 0.08 in the main sequence distribution of stars has been detected between spectral types A3 and A7. Both photometric and spectroscopic data yield a uniform cluster reddening of E(B- V) = 0.06 ± 0.02. A mean distance of 450 pc, an age of 5.7 × 107 years and other cluster parameters are derived. The luminosity function of the bright members of NGC 2547 is in good agreement with the luminosity function averaged over 62 clusters given by Taff (1974).
