We have measured the angular diameter of Mira using the digital speckle interferometer at the 3.60 m ESO telescope, at time of maximum light in t978 and t979. We confirm that the diameter varies abruptly with wavelength, in relation with the TiO spectrum. We estimate the true radius, i.e. corrected for TiO effects, to be θc = 28±6 milliarcsec, or Rc = 230 Rsun assuming a distance of 77 pc; we discuss how dependent this value is upon the model representing the atmosphere. We find that the diameter measured in strong TiO features was larger during the low- luminosity maximum in 1978 than during the normal maximum in 1979.
