The relativistic beam model for compact radio sources is discussed for the case of compact double radio sources such as those of less than about 1 kpc discovered by VLBI methods. The spectral characteristics and morphology of these sources appear to be consistent with those expected for the case of an angle between the beams and the observer's line of sight not greater than 30 deg. The radio emission from compact doubles appears to come from slowly advancing, isotropically radiating regions which have formed at the beam ends. It is noted that not all powerful compact sources appear to be highly beamed emitters, as was once believed. Up to 15% of all sources mapped by VLBI may be more luminous, isotropically emitting symmetric sources, with dominant double structure.
