Direct imaging of extra-solar planets is important for determining the properties of individual planets and to study multi-planet systems. Obtaining spectra of extra-solar planets enables us to constrain the composition of planetary atmospheres and surfaces, their climates, and their rotation periods. The techniques required to isolate and detect an extra-solar planet next to its host star are quite challenging and require significant improvement. SAO is setting up a testbed to study coronagraphic techniques, starting with Labeyrie's multi-step speckle reduction technique. This technique incorporates a speckle phase corrector and second occulter for speckle light suppression. The goal is to study this technique in the testbed for its application in coronagraphic cameras. In addition, the testbed will be used to characterize soft-edge occulters. Simulations of soft-edge occulters with a Gaussian absorption profile show a promising reduction of the flux in the core of the point spread function in coronagraphs. We expect this to lead to a reduction in the inner working distance and to an increase in contrast ratio compared to a Lyot coronagraph. The occulters for the tests will be developed in Harvard's Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences and by Lockheed-Martin Corp. This poster will present the setup of SAO's testbed, simulations for all developments, and first test results.
