We demonstrate the feasibility of discovering supermassive black hole (SMBHs) in ``normal'' spiral galaxies using a combination of X-ray selection and multi-wavelength follow-up. We carried out a Chandra survey of nearly face-on spiral galaxies and uncovered a population of low-mass SMBHs providing a way to investigate the low-mass end of the local BH mass function. We were sensitive to Eddington luminosity ratios as low as 10-6. Some galaxies with small or no bulges also appear to host SMBHs. This calls into question whether the fundamental property related to a nuclear SMBH is the bulge or the dark matter halo.
