We reconsider two hypotheses used in calculating the transfer of angular momentum between the oceans and the solid Earth: (1) The locked-ocean-hypothesis was already given up some time ago; here we provide a simple manner of understanding the relative importance of the motion and matter term. (2) The isolation hypothesis implied the isolation of the whole Earth in short timescales with regard to angular momentum exchange, and consequently, the neglection of the exchange with the tide-generating body. It is shown that for present accuracy requirements this exchange has to be taken into account.
