The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is a 5000 sq. deg. griz imaging survey to be conducted in 2009-2014 using the proposed 3 sq. deg. Dark Energy Camera and the CTIO Blanco 4m telescope (See the poster of M. Gladders). The DES is designed to provide data that will yield accurate multi-band fluxes and shapes of galaxies to i=24, yielding precision galaxy photometric redshift estimates (See the poster of H. Lin et al). The aim of the DES is to carry out 4 dark energy key projects: galaxy clusters, weak lensing, galaxy angular correlations, and Type Ia supernovae (see the poster of J. Frieman). The survey area is chosen to encompass the SZ cluster survey of the South Pole Telescope; the DES will obtain photometric redshifts for the vast majority of clusters detected by the SPT out to z=1.3. The DES is a next generation sky survey, requiring strategies that make optimal use of multiple pointed observations of the survey area. Here we present the survey strategy, highlighting the role multiple sky tilings and large scale relative photometry play in achieving high precision photometry.
