The Apollo 17 command service module in lunar orbit will carry a far ultraviolet scanning spectrometer whose prime mission will be to measure the composition of the lunar atmosphere. Additional observations will include the spectral lunar albedo, the temporary atmosphere injected by the engines of the lunar exploration module, the solar system atmosphere, the galactic atmosphere and the spectra of astronomical sources, including the Earth. A detailed description of the experimental equipment which observes the spectral range 1180 to 1680 Å, the observing program and broad speculation about the possible results of the experiment, are presented.
