We report on our experiences with middle-school age girls in a Girl Scout activity that centers around black holes and supernova remnants. These activities are packaged into a patch activity called ``Big Explosions and Strong Gravity" (BESG) and utilizes science ``kits" that we have developed. This program draws its excitement from the observing of supernova and black holes. These astronomical objects are used as a basis for exploration of the electromagnetic spectrum, chemistry, stellar evolution, and orbital motion. These topics address national middle-school and high-school science standards for earth and space science and are approached using inquiry-based teaching methods. We held an intensive BESG day in July 2004 with sixty participants and a teacher evaluator and have now posted updated activity descriptions to a website.
We gratefully acknowledged funding from the Chandra X-ray Center through an Education and Public Outreach proposal grant for Chandra Cycle 5. This work was done in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland.
