When Canada's first national observatory opened in 1905, J. S. Plaskett (1865 - 1941) was a junior member of the staff. He soon took charge of the astrophysical program and made the country a major force in astronomy by developing instrumentation, proving Jan Oort's theory of galactic rotation, and leading the drive for a second national observatory.
