Coalescing binaries are among the sources of gravitational radiation to be detected by the currently planned high-sensitivity laser-interferometer antennas. This paper considers the problem of estimating the arrival time at a detector of a signal (or 'chirp') from such an object. This is an important parameter to analyze, because it is crucial in the measurement of time delays between pairs of antennas arranged in a world-wide network, which in turn are needed to determine the source's characteristics (position, distance, and mass). First, the general problem of timing is surveyed and a convenient criterion is selected, then it is applied to produce realistic figures. The results of the analysis are encouraging, for timing errors can be reduced to about one millisecond, which is adequate for the purpose.
