We present the conclusions from a programme of optical and infrared monitoring of 19 Herbig Ae/Be stars and show that some objects selected using the criteria of Herbig are not pre-main-sequence objects. The data are examined to verify reported trends of variability with spectral type, to compare optical and near infrared variability and to determine the causes of such variability. We find that the dependence of the amplitude of variability on spectral type is not as well defined as implied by Finkenzeller & Mundt and that a variety of variability mechanisms are probably at work.
