Ultrahigh energy (UHE) gamma rays have recently been observed from Cygnus X-3 and from Vela X-1. Data from the University of Adelaide air-shower array at Buckland Park taken over a three-year period have been analyzed to search for evidence of UHE gamma ray emission from additional neutron star binary X-ray sources having known orbital periods. The results of this research are presented, and the detection of UHE gamma rays from LMC X-4 above 10 to the 16th eV with an integral flux of (4.6 + or - 1.7) x 10 to the -11th photons/sq m/s is reported. This is the first extragalactic object to be positively detected at these energies.
