Different hypotheses of the origin of comets and asteroids are examined. Consideration is given to the interaction of planetisimals in the asteroid zone with gas, their perturbations by proto-Jupiter, and their sweeping out by more massive bodies of the Jupiter zone when they penetrated the asteroid zone. Restrictions on the runaway growth of giant planets, the relative velocities of bodies, and the disk surface density that follow from the consideration of the origin of the asteroid belt and the cometary cloud are discussed.
