Technical advances which have provided for increased sensitivity as well as progressively increasing spectral resolution in the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) are discussed. Far infrared and submillimeter observations at wavelengths from 0.1 to 1 mm reveal a variety of spectral lines arising from atomic and ionic fine structure transitions or rotational transitions of molecules. Advances in photometry, mapping capabilities and polarization analyses aboard KAO are summarized. Ways in which these new capacities have resulted in new astronomical insight are discussed.
