Results are presented from simultaneous measurements, performed on October 19, 1984, of energetic protons and alpha particles in the regions close to the bow shock (by AMPTE/IRM) and further upstream (by ISEE 1), supplemented by AMPTE/CCE energetic particle observations outside and within the magnetosphere close to the noon magnetopause. A possible magnetospheric contribution to the magnetosheath/upstream energetic particle population is estimated by comparing the spectral shapes and absolute intensities in these various spatial regions. Predictions by the magnetospheric leakage model are compared to those by the bow-shock acceleration model. The results showed that the observations are consistent with the bow-shock acceleration model, but not with the magnetospheric leakage model.
