Observations of the Ly-alpha brightness in the Jupiter's atmosphere were carried out on December 28, 1988 and January 10, 1989 by the short-wavelength camera aboard the IUE satellite, in order to isolate the effect of radiative transfer on Jupiter's H Ly alpha brightness. Results of model runs show that the observed curves are consistent with resonant scattering for the expected H abundance; however, the models are not consistent with the observed high brightness. On the other hand, if the high brightness is modeled by the resonant scattering alone, the model no longer fits the observed center to limb curve. These results are interpreted as an indication of a large contribution to the observed emission from resonant scattering of solar emission.
