A critical analysis of the present state of research of the negative polarization of light mechanisms is made. Several groups of mechanisms are considered, among which are: (1) double Fresnel reflection without considering of electromagnetic phases, (2) refraction of light on emerging from semitransparent medium, (3) diffraction by the edge of particles, (4) the effect of shape of separate particles (properties of individual scatterers), (5) coherent amplification of backscattering. A correlation between calculations performed in the context of corresponding models and experimental data is made. On the basis of the correlation it was concluded that the most probable cause of the negative polarization occurrence (as well as the opposition effect of brightness arising) is interference of rays travelled equal distances in medium.
