Planetesimals: Relaxation, Planetesimals: Orbital Evolution
Scientific paper
The growth rate of mean square orbital eccentricities and inclinations for a population of planetesimals of mass m1 due to gravitational interaction with a population of bodies with mass m2 is estimated. The chaotic velocity evolution of a bimodal collision-free gravitating system with m1 ≫ m2 for time much larger than the gravitational relaxation time is considered for two cases: when the velocity is controlled (a) by large bodies and (b) by small bodies. For the dominating in mass component a mean square eccentricity and a mean square inclination grow as one fourth power of time. For the case (a) mean square orbital eccentricities and inclinations of small bodies are approximately twice larger than these values of large bodies. For the case (b) mean square eccentricities and inclinations of both populations approximately correspond to equipartition in their energies of chaotic motion.
