A brief review is presented concerning the phenomena of solar eclipses. Discussions on solar eclipse durations and tracks of totality, as well as the Saros periodic repetitions of eclipses are included. Scientific experiments conducted during total solar eclipses are then examined. The experiments cover the measurement of astronomical, geophysical, and physiological phenomena. Finally, the importance of eclipses in scientific research is briefly reviewed. It is concluded that solar eclipses still provide the most convenient means for studying the outer layers of the sun and the response of the earth atmosphere to the energy flux radiated by it.
