A cratered surface model is presently used to interpret the high observed fluxes of Veeder et al. (1987) for Deimos, taking surface heat conduction and the ellipsoidal shape of Deimos into account. The best match emerges from a combination of semispherical craters and a crater density of about 0.9, in conjunction with a lunarlike regolithic heat-conduction coefficient. The calculated fluxes are approximately within the error bounds of the measured values; such discrepancies as remain between theory and observation may be due to the unreliability of measurements at 4.8 microns, as well as global shape effects.
