Optical observations of the inner region of the Centaurus A jet are used to show that the optical emission knot found there coincides in length and breadth with the dimensions of X-ray and radio features located at the same site. Although extended regions of ionized gas exist in the inner regions of Cen A and are known to be associated with the elliptical body of the galaxy, it is shown that the optical knot does not form part of this emission. It is instead a compact condensation confined to the region of the jet alone. Evidence is presented for the presence of the extended ionized gaseous component in the vicinity of the jet. A core/halo structure is found in the knot which lends support to a modified accelerated clump model. These results verify the assumption that the optical knots are physically associated with the jet.
