Impulsive approximation is used to numerically estimate the effect of dynamical friction on the motion of a supermassive (more than 1 billion solar-mass) black hole through a galaxy of 100 billion solar masses which has recoiled from the center of the latter, as a result of anisotropic emission of gravitational radiation or asymmetric plasma emission. The effect is noted to be minimal for a recoil occurring at a velocity greater than that of escape at the center of the galaxy. Although there is a critical velocity of ejection at which the black hole must be ejected for the recoil to be successful, dynamical friction becomes relatively pronounced and damped oscillatory motion of the black hole in the potential well of the galaxy ensues. Observations in which the recoil phenomenon may be implicated are cited.
