Several observations have suggested a massive, dark component to galaxies (the 'mission mass' controversy). Very-low-mass stars near the hydrogen-burning limit (0.07 solar masses) have long been a favorite theoretical candidate for the missing mass. It is shown that the Faint Object Classification and Analysis System faint red star counts do not support this hypothesis for the disk and that the stellar luminosity function at the faint end of the main sequence (for the lowest-mass stars, M less than 0.1 solar masses) most likely decreases with decreasing with decreasing absolute luminosity. This faint red star search was done out to 40-100 pc from the sun; it implies small or negligible dynamical consequences arising from intrinsically faint stars in the disk. This extreme M-dwarf search is being continued to beyond 2 kpc (halo) with the new CCD survey on the CTIO 4-m telescope. Multicolor CCD data on the Lowell 1.8-m telescope for a complete sequence of M dwarfs to dM9 is presented. The 0.7-1 micron color of the most extreme M dwarfs reaches a limiting value.
