A fine abundance analysis of the Am star HR 178 is performed in the visual region, absolute and relative to 15 Vulpeculae, with a line-blanketed convective model atmosphere. This evolved non-pulsating star shows the typical abundance anomalies of the M.S. classical Am stars. HR 178 cannot be regarded as a δ Del star because of the Ca and Sc deficiency, but is similar to other Am stars in the blue side of the Cepheid instability strip with Sc and Ca anomalies not decreasing with advancing evolution. The authors notice a discrepancy between the very strong metallicity indices from visual and UV photometries and the moderate overabundance of Fe for this star, which shows exceptional depth of the strong lines and a high plateau of the curve of growth.
