It is shown that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) provide a good match to spectral lines observed at visible wavelengths in the diffuse interstellar bands. Analysis demonstrates that molecules with 5-15 atoms will be dissociated photothermolytically in the diffuse interstellar medium (DIM), thereby ruling out carbon chains. PAHs, however, can be singly ionized in the DIM, and have exhibited optically active transitions in limited laboratory tests. Furthermore, PAHs are absent in regions where large volume of CO clouds are observed, which is consistent with the concept that the carbon necessary is locked up by the CO. Further laboratory and astrophysical data are necessary to confirm the positive results with the present data base.
