Left and right-circular polarization spectra of comet Austin (1982 VI) were taken between 3 and 12 August 1982 at 1667 MHz and 1665 MHz, the main Λ doubling transitions of the OH molecule within the ground state 2Π3/2J = 3/2. A significant frequency shift was observed between 6 and 12 August that the author attributes to a Zeeman displacement corresponding to an average line-of-sight magnetic field of +50±21 γ. The sign is compatible with the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) at the comet, inferred from existing data. The amplitude requires an amplification of the IMF which is typically 15 γ at 0.75 AU, the average heliocentric distance of C/Austin. The similarity of the 1667 MHz and 1665 MHz total power spectra excludes a magnetic field strength larger than 300 γ, whatever the field inclination to the line-of-sight.
