Three main calibrations required for the Optical Telescope Assembly and a Fine Guidance Sensor are discussed, and attention is given to the constraints of in-flight metrology, the complexity of the optical components, the demands of a milliarcsecond precision, and the absence of ideal measurement standards. The three Fine Guidance Systems, each composed of an optical system, detector system, and control computer are described. Astrometric modes are covered, with focus placed on positional astrometry, angular diameter and color index measurements, and double star astrometry. Inflight calibration with the help of either a minor planet or artificial satellite is considered in the framework of the plate scale calibration. As far as the optical field angle distortion calibration is concerned, it is pointed out that with a milliarcsecond level contour map of the distortions, high-precision relative positional astrometry can be carried out successfully.
