Automatically processed digital ionograms from mid-latitude sites have been used to study the N(h) profile in the F1 region at mid latitudes, as part of an attempt to produce an empirical model of that profile. The observations are found to be consistent with a profile shape composed of overlapping F1 and F2 layers, with the F1 layer being basically Chapman-like, and with the values of foF1 and hmF1 corresponding to a point of inflection in the total profile. Both foF1 and hmF1 are found to be affected by Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs), which completely dominate any diurnal variation of hmF1, thus precluding the derivation of a model for the variations of that parameter. The F1 profile shape is found to be closely linear in plasma frequency, and the changes in foF1 and hmF1 due to TIDs are found to be correlated, as the point corresponding to the deduced values of foF1 and hmF1 moves up and down the profile.
