We present low resolution spectra (3800-7000 A; approximately 13 A) of a 20-mag star in the direction of the galactic bulge that presumably underwent a microlensing event in early September 1994. Thanks to the immediate alert, for the first time it was possible to observe the star near the moment of maximum intensity. The comparison with a spectrum obtained after the fading shows no spectral variations. This is a compelling evidence that the brightening was indeed caused by gravitational lensing, excluding the possibility that the event was due to some class of variable star. We conclude that the lensed star is a late G/early K subgiant (spectral class most probably K0 IV), moderately reddened (E(B-V) approximately 0.75) at a distance of 8.5-4+6 kpc and with a relatively high radial velocity (-400 +/- 50 km/sec), i.e., the star is probably located quite close to the galactic center.
