Radiofrequency absorption lines from many molecules have been observed against Cas A since the discovery of OH, even using small single dish telescopes at mm wavelengths where the continuum antenna temperature is well below 1 K. We show here that the apparent optical depth seen in mm-wave measurements is not the true optical depth, if for no other reason than that the line emission is not negligible at the temperatures and densities inferred for the neutral gas (10 - 20 K, 1000 - 4000 H2/cu cm). We have detected the J = 2 - 1 line of CS in the Perseus Arm gas at -40 km/s toward Cas A for the first time, but weakly in emission (Tr* = 0.02 K). This gas may arise behind the remnant.
