Image Restoration

Scientific paper

The formal criterion is found for the choice of the blurred and noised images of an arbitrary object in the case when the alternative object is known. The criterion generalizes the analogous result by J. Harris (1964) to situations when a priori probabilities of the objects presence are not given and arbitrary probabilities of type-I and type-II mistakes (α and β, respectively) are allowed. The exact expression for the limiting resolving power under given α, β and signal to noise ratio Ψ is found. The limiting resolving power depends only on t = (zα+zβ)/Ψ, where zɛ is the quantile of the normal distribution. For bright objects, limiting resolution is proportional to Ψ-1/2. A number of examples is considered that have self-dependent significance for practice.
