First optical spectrophotometric observations of the recently discovered cataclysmic variable CPD -48°1577 are presented. The spectra show strong Balmer absorption troughs with superimposed emissions, as well as He I, He II, and C III-N III emission features, with complex profile structures. From radial velocity measurements the authors derived a preliminary value of the orbital period of 0.187±0.003 day. The place of CPD -48°1577 among the cataclysmic variables is briefly discussed.
