A sample of optically-selected quasar candidates is presented. The candidates were discovered on the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope objective-prism plate UJ3682P, centred at (1950) 0053, -2803 and containing the South Galactic Pole. There are 162 candidates in the central square of area 25 sq deg, giving a simple surface density of 6.5/sq deg in that area. Three of the quasars are identified with radio sources, but one of the identifications is uncertain. The results of objective prism spectrophotometry of a subsample of the candidates are presented and used in discussions of the collective properties and the selection effects. Analysts of the sample are advised to consider the selection effects.
