The visual spectra of 18 white dwarfs previously given spectral type DC have been reexamined using the image intensified dissector scanner on the Kitt Peak 2.1-m telescope. With this new high signal-to-noise data, only eight stars remain classified DC, while two are cool narrow lined DA, three appear as cool DB, two show evidence of the Swan bands of the C2 molecule, and one may have an unidentified feature near λ5000. The remaining object is of a new variety, hitherto unreported, that has its spectrum dominated by C I lines.
