The strong, highly variable continuum radiated by active galactic nuclei must come either from relativistic jets, or from very compact sources. Limits for the compactness of the central sources are derived from radiative transfer calculations. In sources driven by high energy electrons, the main limitation is associated with pair production by heavily absorbed, inverse-Compton gamma-rays.
