It is shown that the final state of a solar flare is a force free field with constant α where α is determined by the boundary conditions. This result is independent of the details of magnetic energy build up and release. The crucial assumptions are that during the period of rapid magnetic energy release the effects of slow photospheric foot point motions can be neglected and that magnetic field reconnection occurs in regions whose total volume is small compared to that of the overall configuration.
