The present investigation is concerned with the results of a survey of 3-4 micron spectra of early-type emission line stars. The survey represents an attempt to place constraints on the mechanisms for unidentified emission features which were first discovered in the spectrum of a pre-main-sequence Be star (HD 97048) by Blades and Whittet (1980). Subsequent attempts to detect the unidentified features in other Herbig Be and Ae stars have served to emphasize the unusual nature of the HD 97048 spectrum. Attention is given to HD 97048, TY Coronae Astralis, Elias 1, NGC 1333 and BD+30.549 deg, and a list of 21 early-type emission line stars which show no convincing evidence for the unidentified emission features. It is concluded that the failure to detect spatially extended emission at 3.5 microns in the reflection nebula around HD 97048, and the detection of 3.3 micron emission in the reflection nebula NGC 1333 around BD+30.549 deg, are particularly significant results.
