The image we have of the universe at ultra-high energies is still fuzzy but its quality keeps on improving with the construction of better telescopes. I will review our current understanding of the information contained in the available data as obtained by the AGASA and HiRes experiments and the theoretical insights that can be inspired by these data. Particular emphasis will be given to issues related to the origin of the ultra-high energy radiation and to its propagation in the intergalactic space. I will also attempt to provide an educated guess of what the picture of the universe may look like with the Pierre Auger project first and with EUSO later when the window at >1020 eV will be finally open.
