Ages, metallicities, space velocities, and Galactic orbits of stars in the Solar neighbourhood are fundamental constraints on models of Galactic evolution. The Geneva-Copenhagen Survey of the Solar Neighbourhood (GCS; Nordström et al. 2004) is the largest and least-biased complete sample of such data for the long-lived nearby stars. When interpreting the GCS data, it is crucial to understand and minimise any errors in the calibrations transforming the observed data into astrophysical parameters. We have verified and/or improved all the GCS photometric calibrations of Teff, [Fe/H], E(b-y) and distance and re-checked their effect on the derived ages, using a large body of V-K photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy. Extensive numerical simulations are used to verify the robustness of the derived G-dwarf metallicity distribution, the age-metallicity relation for the thin and thick disks, and the dynamical heating of the disk. None of the main conclusions of the GCS changes as a result of these revisions. We find that the Hyades cannot be used to check the calibrations because of a problem with the published photometry and the peculiar He abundance of this cluster.
