The density of Ly-alpha absorbing systems towards high-redshift quasars shows no evidence of modulation on velocity scales appropriate to galaxy superclusters or voids. If voids are severely deficient in such Ly-alpha clouds, then they must occupy less than 5 percent of the cosmic volume. If, on the other hand, voids have a larger filling factor, the cloud population within them must be comparable with that elsewhere; moreover, if the absorbing clouds are pressure-confined by a hot intergalactic medium, then the required pressure is quite close to that in other regions.
