The inner zone of the disk in an X-ray pulsar system will tend to take up a position either along the spin axis of the neutron star or normal to it, depending on the angle between the magnetic and angular-momentum vectors of the star. In the former case the pulsar may have an abnormally low spin-up rate, and indeed the spin-up may give way to a spin-down, while the accretion process continues. An explanation is offered for the optical pulsations in the HZ Her (Her X-1) system.
