Ground-based observations of Paschen alpha yield an equivalent width of 79 A in P Cyg and upper limits in the range 6 A-10 A for four other luminous early-type stars that are known to be losing mass. The ratios P-alpha/H-beta and P-alpha/H-alpha for P Cyg are approximately in accord with line ratios predicted for optically thick, low temperature (30,000 K) envelopes. The observations demonstrate that, at least for Mauna Kea, atmospheric transmission is high enough (about 16%) to allow observations at 1.9 micron.
