The authors have obtained high-resolution infrared spectra of the unusual hydroxyl maser, IRC +10420, in order to study the velocity structure of its mass-loss region and to determine column densities of molecular and atomic species in its atmosphere and circumstellar environment. The fundamental band lines of 12CO and 13CO have P Cygni profiles. The spectrum of IRC +10420 also contains absorption lines in the Brackett series of hydrogen and emission lines of Fe II and Mg I. The hydrogen lines are photospheric while the emission lines appear to originate in a thin chromosphere expanding at 30 km s-1 with respect to the photosphere. A detailed model for the circumstellar shell of IRC +10420 is presented.
