New optical spectra of Mrk 507 show that it is a narrow-line Seyfert galaxy with permitted Fe II emission (a member of the I Zw 1 class), thus solving a long-standing puzzle about its nature. The spectrum is very similar to that of 5C 3.100. The X-ray luminosities of Mrk 507 and 5C 3.100 in the 0.5 - 4.5 keV band are respectively 8.1×1042 and 2.4×1043ergs s-1, typical of type 1 Seyferts. It appears that a continuum extending to X-rays is a necessary condition for the excitation of permitted Fe II lines in Seyfert galaxies. The implications for the classification and interpretation of Seyfert types are discussed. The infrared emission characteristics of these galaxies are also discussed.
