Assuming that the tail magnetic field has the geometrical features suggested by Russell (1977) and that three-dimensional loops of closed fieldlines may develop in the distant magnetotail, a qualitative pattern of the current lines which corresponds to such fields is constructed. The geometry of the current density (j) lines is analyzed, and the pattern of the j-lines is interpreted as a result of combining the reconnection and current diversion processes. The magnetotail field considered here is one of the simplest possible idealizations of the geomagnetic tail, taking into account the finiteness of the lateral width of the tail structure; it makes it possible to deduce the most essential and qualitative features of the tail current system.
