The Nearby Supernova Factory reports the discovery of supernova SNF20051021-001 (coordinates RA 04:16:12.37 DEC -13:13:11.6 J2000.0) in images obtained October 21.5 UT at an approximate magnitude of 17.8 (calibrated to R) using the Quest II camera on the Palomar Oschin 48-inch telescope as a part of the JPL Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking component of the Palomar Consortium. A spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of this supernova, obtained October 23.5 UT with the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope, shows it to be a Type II supernova at an approximate redshift of z = 0.03.
