The known history of the solar system is discussed as it relates to the stability of the orbits of the planets and satellites. The calculation of planetary ephemerides from classical theories of celestial motions and computerized analytical theories and the fitting of the theories to observations by hand and by numerical integration are discussed. The near commensurabilities in mean motion observed between the various asteroid families and Jupiter, within three pairs of satellites of Saturn (Mimas-Tethys, Dione-Enceladus, Titan-Hyperion) and among the Jupiter satellites Io, Europa and Ganymede are considered and results of backward numerical integrations of the orbits of the five outer planets are presented. The applicability of the critical stability criterion in the coplanar three-body problem to the many bodies of the solar system is then examined.
